I have two projects right now and I haven't started either one. The first is the media room...that is for another post. :) I have a slight idea as to what I want to do in there. The project that is more at the top of my list is our half bath - and please don't call it the powder room! I hate that term! Way back in the day powder rooms were places where women could go to freshen up their makeup and use the restroom - it was strictly reserved for women. The term originated around 1875! Powder room...it sounds so froo froo! I have a half bath.
So, I have NO idea how to decorate it. There is a white pedestal sink and a toilet and a pretty cheap looking mirror. I am not against painting...but would rather not...too much of a hassle!
Here are a few ideas I did have, and let me know what you think:
-getting four Sid Dickens tiles or something similar (spread out of course - those are expensive!) and hanging them inside of a 4 panel empty antique looking window pane - either above the toilet or to the wall to the right of the toilet (does that make sense!?)
-I have several wooden ledge shelves from PB I could hang on either wall and place few knick knacks
-maybe replace the mirror?
-maybe hang a ledge above the toilet and put in another hand towel bar below it?
I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, but I don't want it to look like a cheap-o job either. I also realize I need to get some color in there! Does anyone know where to get inexpensive, but cute mirrors? Or what about a rug for in there!? I can't find one I like anywhere!
Any ideas are much appreciated!! :) Thanks!!!

Your half bath fixtures look just like ours! In fact, I am pretty certain we have the same sink.
ReplyDeleteFor cheap mirrors check with:
~Wal-mart (Their Better Homes and Gardens line is fab)
~Some furniture stores have odd lots of mirrors and sell them in the back of the store (I guess some people buy dressers without mirrors) but they are often quite large and cost around 30-40$
~Also, Goodwill may have some cheapy mirrors that, with a good coat of paint on the trim, will look lovely up on the wall.
For Rugs:
~I always check pier 1 and World Market. I can find the perfect size and spend no more than $20!
~A damask patterned rug would be fun since it fits with Sid Dickens style and damask comes in so many fun colors now!
Decor:
~I would hang all four tiles together for max effect but that is up to you. I would also think of including sconces and maybe a hanging floral arrangement. If you get Michael's coupons, you can make your own floral arrangement at a good price. Is there already a towel bar in the bathroom? We left just one in ours but if you like to decorate with towels, go for it. If you added your shelves I would get some canvas art to prop up on it and maybe some cute little accessories to compliment it. All of those methods- candles, art, flowers, whatever you choose, should be a good way to add color. You could also match your hand towels to whatever accent color you chose.
My favorite go to places for decor are T.J Maxx, Ross, Home Goods, Marshalls, Tuesday Morning, etc. I love the thrill of the hunt and the great deals!
Sorry this comment is long but hopefully it will give you some ideas. Don't you just love having a blank canvas that is a new house?!?! I can't wait to hear what you are going to do with the media room!
Wow- Rachel has said it all - her and I have very similar tastes- Em she is right on the mark with her ideas and stores- poke around and you can find one of a kind great deals! Happy decorating!
ReplyDeleteDitto Rachel's comments!! I like the idea of finding a new mirror definitely... maybe finding an inexpensive wood-framed one that you could paint an accent color like red or blue - that would add color.
ReplyDeleteAlso, love the canvas propping on the ledge idea - I like to try and focus on 2-3 larger accessories that a lot of little ones - these will make a bigger impact, especially if you are trying to add color accents.
